| Does anyone know of any flea markets in the central Mass. area where
you can regularly find dealers who sell NASA (and other) patches?
They usually are rejects or factory seconds, but one can often find
near-perfect patches. I have gotten many of my souvenir-size emblems
from the shuttle program, Skylab, Apollo-Soyuz, Apollo, Gemini and
even Mercury (!) from flea markets. I've even found rarities such
as a perfect Approach & Landing Test (Enterprise), full-sized Apollo
7 and 8 patches, and full-sized STS-1 and STS-7. And I'm always
looking for more....

| I saw them at the Norton Flea Market (in Norton, MA) last year;
also at the Grafton Flea Market (in Grafton, MA). I'd try Norton
over Grafton, though, since Norton is quite a bit larger.

498.6 | Check the names! | 6297::PHILLIPS | Music of the spheres. | Wed May 16 1990 10:35 | 25 |
| I had a really eerie experience this morning with one patch I picked
up at a flea market a while ago.
It is a 3" souvenir-size patch of the 18th shuttle flight (flight
51-G) which was the Discovery (OV-103) in June of 1985. The crew
for that flight included Brandenstein, Creighton, Nagel, Fabian,
Lucid, Al-Saud and Baudry. The last two named were the payload
specialists, and their names appear on the "tab" attached to to
round section of the patch.
I must have looked at my patch a hundred times before; but I suddenly
noticed this morning that the names on my patch's "tab" were not
Al-Saud and Baudry! On my patch are the names of two other payload
specialists who were originally to fly in 51-G but were "bumped"
to later flights. (They must have been "bumped" pretty late in the
mission planing, since the patch was produced, and in souvenir form
at that!)
One name was "Walker"; I presume it was Charles D. Walker, who flew
in 61B (Atlantis) in November of 1985....
....the other name was "Jarvis" - Gregory Jarvis of Hughes Aircraft,
who died in the Challenger accident.

498.7 | Lotsa luck, but it's all been bad... | 6297::PHILLIPS | Music of the spheres. | Thu May 31 1990 11:33 | 14 |
| Re. .3
I haven't had any luck this year finding any flea market dealers
who are selling space patches - in fact, the only one I found with
embroidered patches was selling police dept. and sheriff patches.
Phooey!
I know there must be someone out there with space patches at these
flea markets. So, if anyone finds such a dealer, please PLEASE
get his name (address, phone #, whatever) for me so I can get in
touch. I'm sure I could clear out a lot of his stock......:^)
Anxious,

498.8 | The survey *says*..... | 6297::PHILLIPS | Music of the spheres. | Fri Apr 12 1991 10:37 | 11 |
| It's springtime, it's flea market time, it's hunting-for-space-patches-
at-flea-market-time..... :) My request still stands; anyone who finds
a NASA patch dealer at a flea market, please get me his name/phone
number/etc. so I can track him down.
While we're waiting for the weekend to come, how about a poll from you
patch collectors. Which of the forty-odd shuttle patches do you you
consider to be the most beautiful? I'll post my top five (and maybe
even my *bottom* five!) as soon as I look through my collection....

498.9 | Success!! | STRATA::PHILLIPS | Music of the spheres. | Wed May 27 1992 11:52 | 19 |
| Two weeks ago, I FINALLY found a dealer at the Hubbardston (MA) flea
market who regularly deals with NASA patches. He says he is there
every week, so I'll give him some regular business.
All of his patches are irregulars, but with some diligent digging, I
found some really nice patches:
3" (souvenir size) STS-41G (I bought a couple!)
3" " STS-1
4" (full size) STS-1 (*very* near mint condition!)
4" (full size) Skylab 2 (another excellent patch)
3" Apollo 8 (slightly offset lettering)
3" Apollo 7 (a few glue smears, not very obvious)
and one patch I'd never seen before from the Goddard Space Flight
Center.
All in all, a pretty good haul - and for only 50 cents per patch!
