462.0. "STS26 Car Passes Are Here !!" by RDCV02::JCONNELL () Tue Sep 13 1988 11:57

If anyone out there has written NASA Headquarters for a car pass
    to STS26 they're here !!!!!

     I received mine.Number 00878 so I guess only 877 people got one
ahead of me and who knows how many behind.

If anyone is planning on going down let me know maybe we can have
    a DEC party down there.

Sure am. Got mine the same day as .0 Have plane ticket, car pass and
garanteed hotel reservations. The hotel reservations are for a town 30
miles away! All the stuff near the Cape is absolutely sold out, so if
you're planning on going, get reservations.

Everybody cross your fingers that this beast goes up on time.

    Living there helps.

I remember in the Apollo days that the local Chambers of Commerce
(or someone) had lists of people who would rent you a room in their house so
that you could stay in Titusville, Cocoa, Cocoa Beach, Merritt Island
or any of the other towns around the space center if you couldn't
find hotel rooms. We didn't participate, but many did.

I was on KSC for the first launch (we stayed until it went up and
missed several classes at college). If this is your first time down
there, you will really enjoy it.

Our 'spot' out there was reached by entering KSC at the gate nearest
the Visitor's Center on SR 406 (Columbia Blvd) just south of
Titusville. Proceed straight until you are past the access road
to the VAB (SR 3, I beleive). You want to be out on the Banana River
-- there is then NOTHING blocking your view from the shore of the
River to the pad. You will be looking straight at the cargo bay
doors of the shuttle. For the 9:59 launch, be on the Cape by 7:00,
if not earlier. Whether it goes or not, you won't get out until
after 1 or 2 in the afternoon. Enjoy.
