There's a pretty good article on the shuttle redesign in Tuesday's New York Times (section C1). It says that this Sunday the Discovery will be wheeled out to the pad for a checkup. And then on July 22nd the main engines will be fired for 20 seconds. Four days later, the last of the solid rocket motor tests will be conducted by Morton Thiokol. I don't think it mentioned a launch date, but the first week in September would be a good guess.

Boy, if the "Discovery" article is "detailed" then the NY Post = NY Times. As with other times when I bought this magazine, I was disappointed with the lack of technical detail and the subjective writing. I'm not looking for the same detail as "Science", but the information and prose is only one step higher than "Popular Science"-if you know what I mean. Save your money. |
