| Yup, it was a Titan 34D and was probably carrying a KH11. Officially,
it was a 'secret military payload'. Some secret, when some USAF bigwig
pronounces that this puts the US 'back in the surveillance business'.
At least the NRO will be happy.
It was NOT the first successful Titan launch in two years, a Titan
34B/Agena went up earlier this year. The 34D had been cleared for
flight some time ago and I assume the delay in launching was to
bring a backup satellite out of storage and ready it for flight.

| How can the NRO be happy when they do not exist? :^)
In case anyone missed the joke, the recent NOVA program entitled
"Spy Machines" dealt with the NRO agency, which supervises spy
satellite development, and which *officially* does not exist. Some
government secret, huh?

| You're right, I had forgotten about the earlier launch and therefore
didn't start cussing out the newscaster, as is my usual procedure.

Ooops. Since we now all know about it, we probably have to report
ourselves to the nearest police station, just as you do if you find
out about the NSA. Ooops! I've done it again.
BTW, does anyone have a tape of that Nova that I could borrow?
I managed to mistape it several times.

| An interesting book that discusses the NRO, spysats and other related
topics is 'Spy-Tech', by Graham Yost (Facts on File publications,
1985). About 160 of its 260 pages deals with reconnaissance, the
rest with other espionage technology. I haven't finished it yet,
but so far its interesting reading.

361.7 | Any unscheduled recon launches over to Iraq? | 30086::REITH | Jim Reith DTN 226-6102 - LTN2-1/F02 | Thu Jan 17 1991 12:56 | 9 |
| This is probably about the best place to put this. Mr. Moderator,
please move it if there's a better topic.
Has there been any reports of ELV launches with crisis recon sats to
support the current activities in the Gulf? I realize we've still got
several KH birds up there but there has always been talk of being able
to throw up additional birds as the need arose. Granted this was a
planned activity but I would think that a few extra eyes in the sky
would be useful...

| Possible, but unlikely. It is likely that orbits may have changed to
optimise coverage of the area.
Have the Soviets put anything new up in the last week or so into their
standard recsat orbits?

361.9 | 5 months to plan | 60608::MANSFIELD | | Sat Jan 19 1991 21:21 | 4 |
| Given 5 months to plan, they must have put some special eyes up or at
least moved some into direct over orbit. If you can put a bomb down an
airvent then you must be able to put a couple of eyes up in 5 months,
if not you US taxpayers should demand your money back.
