354.0. "JANE'S SPACEFLIGHT DIRECTORY" by MONSTR::HUGHES (Walk like an Alien) Wed Oct 07 1987 10:22

    A number of people asked me about the availability of "Jane's
    Spaceflight Directory", a book I refer to frequently when writing
    in this file.

    I tried to locate the 87 edition in various book stores around Boston
    with no luck. Usually I just got a blank stare. If anyone does locate
    it here, please let me know for future reference. I arranged for
    a friend to bring a copy for me from London.

    The UK retail price is 67 pounds, about $110 at current exchange rates.
    Quite expensive but it is about the only space book I buy these days.
    So far it has been a superset of the information contained in various
    books published at more reasonable prices.

    Most of this edition has been rewritten so it is worth getting even
    if you have the 85 or 86 editions.

354.1Jane's in BeantownWAYWRD::ALLEGREZZAGeorge Allegrezza @ TWOMon Oct 12 1987 11:334
    The Jane's organization has an office in Boston. I don't know if it is
    a distribution site or what. I'll look up the address and post it
    here.

354.2 . . . as promised.WAYWRD::ALLEGREZZAGeorge Allegrezza @ TWOTue Oct 13 1987 10:3311
    This is from the "Ask the Globe" column in the Boston fish wrapper.
     It appeared a couple of weeks back in response to a question about
    stores in the Boston area that carry aerospace/military books.

    " . . . Jane's has an office at 20 Park Plaza, Boston, MA 02116.
     You can order books directly from the publisher by calling
    (617) 542-6564, extension 214."

    No mention is made of preferred payment methods. I haven't tried to
    order anything via this office so I don't know if the above statement
    is true. Might be worth a try if you're desperate for a Jane's fix!
354.3Visa, MC and or American Express takenIMBACQ::BIROTue Oct 13 1987 14:5811
    Yes they take Visa, Master and or American Express
    price = $ 137.50

    not sure if that was the right extension, as they transfred
    me to another line, but it is the right number
    the book is publish every June

    thanks for info

    Yup, thats the same info I got. Jane's also publish various newsletters
    which is probably they transferred you (and me). The newsletter
    prices (at least the defense ones) make the annual directories look
    like a bargain.

    I was disappointed that there was such a difference in price. A
    30% uplift is steep. It must be to pay for their Boston office :-)
    The one edition I bought in a book store was within a couple of
    dollars of the UK retail price. The Spaceflight Directory is one
    of the cheaper of Jane's yearbooks.

    If for some reason you plan to buy more than two or three of their
    yearbooks, the difference in price would just about pay for a cheapo
    round trip to London.

    p.s. if anyone in ZK wants to look at this before spending that
    much, mail me and I'll bring one in.
