339.0. "The CHINA 21 Satellite" by IMGAWN::BIRO () Wed Sep 16 1987 09:06

A new Chinese Satellite was launch, it was Reported by J. Perry
to have an Inc of 62.99 deg and a Mean Motion of 16.06 and was
    transmitting on 179.985 MHz

I put my scanner on 179.985 MHz last night and got a good
reception of the bird. It sound like a high pitch buzz with
very little signs of spin modulation or other fadding

Even though in the Boston Area ch -7 is near by, there is
a quite hole at 179.985 that allows for good copy

Hmm. So far all of their satellites launched to 63 degrees have been
carrying recoverable capsules that have returned after a couple
of days. Could be a recsat.

What is 'mean motion'? I can't find a reference to it.

mean motion = the number of eqx crossing per day
thus for a MM of 16

    24 hours/ 16 = 1.5 hours or 1 rev around the equator in 90 min
not quite true but very close

no stated goal for the satellite, but being such a low orbit
and with that inc, it could fit into the
    recon or earth resource catagory

simular satellites launch by the People's Republic of China
    on the 5th of Aug

    1987-067a nasa obj # 18306 PRC-20

Initial orbital parameters however the new birds parameters are
    period 90.2 min 89.7 min
    apogee 395 Km 310 Km
    perigee 193 Km 204 Km
    Inc 63 degrees 63 degrees

On board were two microgravity experimental device from a French
    Company

Recent reports indicate that the People's Republic of China recover
PRC-20 experimental satellite at a predesignated area in China on
    the 10th of Aug 1987

If this is the same type of experimental satellite one would expect
    it to return soon.

China 21 was recovered at 0455 z 17 Sept after an 8 day flight,
the longest yet in the program. Passes heard over the UK at
0440z indicated normal tlm, then passes at 0608z and 0745z indicated
a spin rate of 100 rpm, an showing the bus has seperated from the
return capsul. It is expected the buss will keep tx for a few days
yet on 179.985 and 393.670 MHz

No announcement from PRC on its mission yet?

I did a little research and it would appear that they use the same
basic spacecraft for both recsets and their microgravity experiments.
They seem to have learned a lesson from the Soviets.

The next micorgravity PRC satellite will be launch on
the 8th of Aug, watch for TLM on 179.985 MHZ and
    393.670 MHz.
