323.0. "NEWSWEEK's "Lost in Space"" by DICKNS::KLAES (The Universe is safe.) Wed Aug 12 1987 09:00

In the August 17, 1987 edition of NEWSWEEK magazine, there is
a Special Report on the state of the American space program entitled
    "Lost in Space".

It is an informative overview of where our space program is
now, where our "competition" is (if we were smart, we'd *cooperate*,
not compete), and some practical steps to take to get America in
space again. The cover of the magazine depicts the first U.S. manned
walk in space by GEMINI 4 astronaut Edward White III in 1965, back
when we were making progress with our space dreams.

As a side note to DECcies, see if you can find the VT100 pictured
    in the article.

I read it, and it does present some interesting points.

I specially liked, the discution about the "Big Dump Bosters".

I wonder how the "dollars per pound/kilogram in low Earth orbit"
numbers would come out, if such a system was designed rigth now.
    Using current technology.

I thought they made a little too much of the American facination
for high tech but were right on about the lack of clear goals and
    objectives.

Good point about the Soviets. They believe that man will expand
into space and they want to play a big, if the not the lead, role
in that expansion. I thought Americans were a pioneering people?
Guess we are losing it :-(
