319.0. "The COSMOS 1870 Satellite" by IMGAWN::BIRO () Tue Aug 04 1987 08:40

AW 3-Aug issue had an article about a new Soviet Space Platform
it is about 15-20 tons and in a LEO. Does anyone have any other
info on it other then the AW article. I will try to get a NASA
element set for it as it should be an easy ojb. to see with
    the Naked Eye

forgot, of interest the space platefor was launch during the same week
that Soyuz TM-2 and its crew of three was returning to Earth , the
crew of MIR was undocking Soyuz TM-3 from Kvant and redocking
it to the front docking ball, and on the ground they are
preparing a Progreess (31?) for refuling MIR.

The Space Platform was reported to be carring out both earth
    and ocean studies.

I believe the Space Plateform is # 87-063A
                           or NASA OBJ # 18222

Will do a visual check this weekend if possible and check for radio
signals when both this obj and Sable Island ( Soviet tracking ship
is dock near there) are in view of each other.

if has been reported that Cosmos 1870 is transmitting
    on 180.0 Mhz
I have not heard it but maybe it is commanded on/off
by tracking stations or only on during daytime
