299.0. "Rogers Commission Report at NPL" by VMSDEV::FISHER (Burns Fisher 381-1466, ZKO1-1/D42) Fri Jun 12 1987 14:33

Just a followup to a note I can't find. Way back when we were talking
about the Rogers Commission report, I indicated that it was coming
the the Nashua Public Library. At long last it has arrived, and
not only that, it circulates! You can take it out for three weeks!

Don't bother to try for 3 wks. I have it now!

I just recently started in this file and have sent for the report
my self. I worked for an electronic contractor at langley nasa and
have collected 2 large notebooks of pictures of space shuttle, aircraft
and planets and moons from mercury to uranus (neptune in a couple
years) and a few on halley's comet. if anyone at DIGITAL here in
augusta maine would like to see them, drop me a line and I will
bring them in. does any one know where I can aquire pictures of
galaxies, comets or other nice things? I am still trying to add
    to my collection.
           thanx,Galen

Surely there must be a scanner somewhere in Maine. It would
be an excellent thing if these pictures could be put on-line
for enjoyment of Digital employees across the E-net.

I have over 150 pictures, most of the are aquired by writing to
JPL or other NASA public information offices and asking for them.
just before leaving maine a few years back, Carl ran cosmos. My
brother and I discussed NASA making money from selling these pictures
being taken by the voyagers, when I left I happened into a job at
NASA and found out I could get the pictures but they were free for
the asking. They also write little books on the projects and progress.
I read the one on viking and found it to be a real tear jerker when
they told me both vikings have died. I have been trying to get the
venera pictures on the surface of venus. I called carl sagon's office
a couple years ago to find out where he got his. (he was in the
hospital at the time) his secretary said brown university. they
had tried russian embassy but due to a US/Russian disagreement she
said they were very snotty with her.

I have gotton picture form the Russian Embassy in NY, they were
old ones but nice 8x10 Black and whites photos of Salyut 7 and
some of the Cosmonauts in training. Most had been publish before
    in SOVIET LIFE.

I too have gottong a nice slide set from writing JPL for info on the
Voyager mission. It would be nice to staart a list of who is
responsible for what missions and if pictures or satellite
informaiton is advable for the asking.

299.5world of infoMTBLUE::BARNABY_GALEMon Sep 14 1987 23:2413
I have found that the older pictures/slides are a little harder
to come by. I try finding out which NASA facility had the most to
do with the various projects and call them. NASA has a list of photos
(or did have a few years back). I think I still have it. they said
something to the affect that you get them printed by a contractor.
your cost would be the contractors charge. I guess they send negatives
or slides to them. does anyone know how this works? if I find my
book of photos, I'll put the part # here and type in the info on
ordering. they also have a list of publications. this is where you
would order wall posters. i.e. space shuttle in detail, light spectrum,
planets, and other informative info. (planets poster is very outdated
unless they have revised it) there is a charge for these pubs.

I was just reminded of the high speed of the government(from usaf
days), I called in to find out if they had received my money order
at GPO for the rogers commision report and they said something like
it will take a few thousand years to get it. I ordered a new nasa
    publication list.
     re .3(i think)
I have a nasa photo index that lists pictures of all the launches,
crews and other pictures, but it is a 1980 list and I'll try to
get an updated version. If you want to get a list going on who was
responsable for the launches I will contribute.

There is indeed a catalog of photos available. I'll try to dig out
the order number from my files. The descriptions of many of the
    photos are very cryptic.

My experience is that the publications list is invariably out of
    date.

If you are in the DC area, you can buy many of the NASA pubs at
the book store at the NASM and at the visitor's center at Goddard
    SFC.

If you think ordering books from the USGPO is bad, try it from
overseas. I did and it took nearly a year for them to tell me they
were out of stock and to return my money order in a form that the
Australian Post Office would not refund.

299.8Not all bad experiencesVICKI::LEKASFrom the Terminal of Tony LekasThu Oct 01 1987 13:137
My experience with the USGPO is quite different. I have ordered
books from them on a number of occasions. I always use a Visa
card instead of a money order and place the order over the phone.
As an example I received my copy of the Roger's report in the mail
less than two weeks after I called them.

Just received my vol I. just under 1 month, not bad. very interesting
book. I also received the nasa publications list. yes it is somewhat
out dated. if you order $100 in publications you get 25% of so any
one might consider that if they are going to order the whole rogers
commission report they should find out if that is also included.
I see some off the benifits I lost since I left langley NASA. the
book I got free from NASA tech library cost about $13 in the
    publications list.
