295.0. "SPACE Moderator Notices" by LDP::WEAVER (Laboratory Data Products) Tue Jun 02 1987 22:41

    I would like to hear opinions from others on whether or not
    they would like to see USENET mail posted here. I have taken
    the rather staunch position of trying to discourage USENET
    mail postings, figuring that most people who want it will
    subscribe to the USENET. While I understand that some of it
    contains some content, for the most part I find the signal
    to noise ratio to be too low. That coupled with the fact that
    I always groan when I see a note with 75 or more lines after
    the first screenful.

    Send mail to LDP::WEAVER expressing your opinion. I would
    like people to be candid and to the point, either pro or conn.
    Would you like the Henry Spencer articles here, what is your
    cutoff point for size of articles?

    I want this conference to contain useful information and I would
    like to keep the signal to noise ratio relatively high. Let
    me know what you think.

    						Thanks,
    						-Dave

295.1Once in a while ain't bad...LILAC::MKPROJREAGAN::ZOREWed Jun 03 1987 14:318
    	I'd like to see mostly technical articles about the space program,
    though I must say that I found the editorials posted to be interesting
    and informative. I get the feeling that the management of the space
    program will be just as important to our effort as any technical
    innovations. I should also mention that I don't know how to get
    a USENET subscription.

295.2Usenet subscription instructionsGOLD::ROLLERWed Jun 03 1987 17:2053
    	The new subscription software is in place and functional.
	To use this software you must do the following:

	- Send a message to ROLL::USENET (or ASHBY::USENET) containing
	  the commands you wish executed.[these go in the body of the
    	  mail. Lee]

	- Make sure that the word 'subscription' is in the 'Subject:' field
	  of the mail message.

	- ROLL::USENET will then execute your request. A copy of the logfile
	  will be sent to the requestor, AND ANY OTHER ADDRESSES THAT ARE
	  IN THE COMMAND LINES.

	All questions and/or problems should be addressed to

			ROLL::USENET_DISTRIBUTOR

1. To subscribe to a newsgroup (one line for each desired newsgroup)

	$USELIST ADD your-enet-address desired-newsgroup-name

2. To unsubscribe from a newsgroup (one line for each desired newsgroup)

	$USELIST REMOVE your-enet-address desired-newsgroup
				or
	$USELIST CANCEL your-enet-address desired-newsgroup
				or
	$USELIST DELETE your-enet-address desired-newsgroup

3. To change your address on all distribution lists
   (CAUTION: THIS ONLY WORKS IF YOUR NEW ADDRESS DOES CURRENT EXIST
	IN THE DATABASE)

	$USELIST CHANGE your-old-enet-address your-new-enet-address

4. To remove yourself from ALL distributions (one line does it all)

	$USELIST KILL your-enet-address

5. To get a list of the newsgroups you currently subscribe to

	$USELIST SHOW your-enet-address

6. To get a list of currently active newsgroups

Are there cross charges for this service?

    re .3:  No.

    To add my 2: I am of two minds. On the one had, I get the USENET
    subscriptions, and don't need to see duplicates here. On the other
    hand, a lot of junk comes through USENET, and more than once, I
    have deleted a mailing w/o reading the whole thing, only to discover
    something interesting from it was posted here or somewhere else.

295.5Short ones onlyIMBACQ::BIROThu Jun 04 1987 14:4915
    I think the problem is the lenght of USENET article, if it is
    short (one or two screenfulls) ok but on long USENET maybe cutting
    out the most important part to fit the topic or the point you wanted
    to make.

    Re:4 I don't like to see them go for the same reasons , but very long
    USENET articles make me hit the delete key and I may have missed something
    Also AP article are remove every 24 hrs or whatever so if I am on
    vacation , net is down , whatever I like to see the short article
    about space activities, an example was the AP article on a Progress
    launch I had missed, someone publish it so I was able to keep my
    MIR Timeline up to date.

    	I've been reading this file from start to here, and groan a
    little inside when the aricles run over 100 lines. I read notes
    for "short" breaks during the day. I have enjoyed reading most
    everything, but an article over 100 lines takes more han a couple
    of seconds.  That's my opinion.

295.7Results of request...LDP::WEAVERLaboratory Data ProductsWed Jun 10 1987 20:2530
    I would like to thank the people who have responded to my request.

    The consensus seems to be that most people don't care for long
    articles. There are those who subscribe to the USENET and don't
    care to see stuff twice.

    So I am going to take a bit harsher stance on the USENET mail and
    require that the number of submissions be kept to a bare minimum,
    and they should be edited if over 75 lines to reduce some of the
    noise. It is preferable that the few that may be worthy be kept
    to 50 lines or less.

    While some people like editorials, others don't care for them.
    I prefer to have facts, although I don't mind E-net'ers voicing
    their opinions, I don't think we need weekly editorials posted
    here.

    If someone wants to start a USENET_ON_SPACE conference, or the
    AEROSPACE conference doesn't mind the USENET articles, then people
    can post to their hearts content in one of those.

    The AP articles are a completely different story, and I encourage
    relevant submissions. All I ask of the AP articles is that the
    VT100 graphics be removed so that they lose their "VTX" look and
    look more like straight text. My many thanks to Neil for posting
    relavent articles from the AP wire, please keep up the good work.

    					Thanks in advance for your
    					  cooperation,

    The AEROSPACE conference would be happy to accept the USENET articles.
    Just understand that the material in that conference is not archived
    and is DELETED periodicaly.

295.10Question for moderators58457::SKLEINNulli SecundusFri May 10 1991 11:2111
Re: .7

It appears that over time, it has been 4 years, USENET articles are now the
accepted norm for posting in this conference. I do read USENET and occasionally
post articles here for information or discussion. One particular USENET article
I do not see posted here is the space news from AWST magazine that Henry
Spencer writes. These are very interesting and informative and do elicit a lot
of comment on USENET. I wanted to post in 293, but it is write locked, and I
can see why. Do the moderators object to posting the space news articles? Is
anyone else interested in this information?
