287.0. "Space Videos" by MONSTR::HUGHES (Gary Hughes) Fri Apr 24 1987 15:00

    I thought I'd start this note for a discussion of space videos,
    rather than continue it under the note on the America's Achievments
    in Space note.

287.1ConquestMONSTR::HUGHESGary HughesFri Apr 24 1987 15:0416
    'Conquest' is a series of three one hour tapes produced in the UK
    by the people who produce Space Flight News. I discovered that it
    is available here in the US. In Nashua, the Lechmere video library
    has it. It comes on two VHS cassettes, a two hour and a one hour.

    It covers space history up until about 1983. The real benefit is
    that it is not a US documentary and acknowledges that othe nations
    have space programs. There is a total of about an hour of Soviet
    footage, concentrating on Vostok and cosmonaut training, Lunakhod,
    ASTP and Salyut 6. Some interesting footage of dockings and Soyuz
    in flight.

    Its a lot to cover even in three hours but it is certainly worth
    the $2.50 rental.

287.2New Space Archive discsMONSTR::HUGHESGary HughesFri Apr 24 1987 15:099
    Two new laserdiscs are due out soon in the Space Archives series.

    In May we should see Space Archive #7: Pulling G's, a supersonic
    flight adventure.

    In August, Space Archive #8: The Space Age, a history of the space
    program.

    The Conquest series I mentioned in .1 is to be broadcast on The
    Discovery Channel sometime soon. If you have it on your cable or
    have a satellite dish, you may want keep a lookout for it. It will
    be shown as three 1 hour parts (as it is on the tape).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If anyone finds themselves at the 'Electro 88' in Boston May 10-12, there's
a couple of films that might be worth it:

World Trade Center (Commonwealth Pier)
9am & 2pm
"I Will See Such Things"
Exciting pictures of Uranus from Voyager II NASA

Bayside Expo Center
10:10am & 3:10pm
"US Space Station Assembly Scenario"
Portrays assembly sequence for the proposed space station NASA

I haven't seen these, so I have no idea what's in them... -Tom R.

I just got a 21 page catalog from a Moscow firm 'VIDEOCOSMOS' which
offers many videos (VHS or Betacam; Secam O/K, PAL B/G or NTSC (3.58)
formats), feature films, cartoons, and photos of Soviet space subjects
for private use.

Most videos and films are from the 1960s to 1980s. Run times range
from 10 minute advertisments from manufacturing firms to a 2 hour 1989
documentary on Korolev. I assume they are all in Russian.

Orders are accepted by FAX or letter. I have not ordered anything
from them so I can't comment on speed, quality, or reputability.

If you try to get a catalog by mail you might want to send some form
of return postage (all sales are in $US). I got my copy through
another person.

I am not affiliated in any way with VIDEOKOSMOS.
