278.0. "NASA Space Station Budget Cuts" by HULK::DJPL (Superfight? By-Tor in 3!) Mon Apr 06 1987 18:16

Well, according to what I just heard on CNN:

NASA is now proposing a space station at half-price. It is now
bare-bones. $10.1B is the new cost. They were afraid that the
full $20B station could run into funding problems.

The new station cannot look at the stars.
It cannot look at the sun.
It will have barely enough power to keep itself alive.

I don't know of anymore restrictions or if they are leaving the
    way open for future expansion.

By the way, construction is now slated to start in 1994, 2 years
    later than originally planned.

When is Congress going to open their eyes?

I have also heard that they are trying to turn it into a military
space outpost, along the lines of the SDI program.

I can just see Ronnie in a black cape saying stuff like "This
armed and fully operational battlestation..." and "Fire at will
commander!" and "This battlestation is the ultimate power in the
Universe!" Wait, what's that other station approaching, the one
with the red flag painted on it....

I expect that the Japanese will join us in Europe. If the military wants a
space station let them do it themselves - after all NASA is a civilian
agency. Unfortunately they let the shuttle be hijacked so I guess they
see it as a natural progression.
