    Aviation Leak reported NASA's FY '87 budget was a record $10.7 Billion
    dollars.  Several billion of that were transferred from the DoD
    to pay for the replacement orbiter.  James Fletcher was optimistic
    there would be funds in the budget which could be used to infuse
    some life into the planetary exploration projects which have been
    neglected lately.
    
    I didn't see a word about this in the "standard" news media.  Did
    I miss it or wasn't it considered "newsworthy" enough?  Or were
    the newshounds busy sniffing after that budget analyst guy who
    is (apparently) looking to write a book about the Challenger
    incident and wants some advance publicity?

	I went thru this issue looking for info on who won the fighter competition: GD with the F-16 or Northrup with the F-20 (my favorite). Has anyone heard? It was supposed to be announced last Friday. - Chris (sorry if this isn't strictly SPACE related)

	Well, GD & the F-16 - sort of. The Air Force took the easy way out, which was to pull 200-some-odd F16's out of service and have GD upgrade them to their new air-defense role. This way, the Air Force doesn't have to make a decision in the competition. At least, that's the gist of what I remember reading in the Globe the other day.

	I must of missed the item about NASA's budget. What issue and page of AW&ST was that in? Also, is that figure adjusted for inflation? How does it compare to past budgets if inflation is taken into account?

	I believe it was the November 1 issue, there was a small blurb in the first few pages (near the bullets about recent items). If I get a chance today I'll try to find the article and let everyone know what page and issue. The figure was NOT adjusted for inflation.
