164.0. "CHALLENGER Postal Issues" by ALIEN::MCCARTHY () Thu Mar 20 1986 23:37

    While I was looking for a map in a box of such stuff in my study
    this evening, I spotted another object that I knew was in the box
    but hadn't thought much about for a while.

    When I spotted it, a really morbid thought crossed my mind.

    A couple of years ago the post office orbitted 250,000 envelopes
    with $9.35 express mail stamps in the cargo hold of the shuttle,
    then sold them through the philatelic sales division at 15 bucks
    a shot.

    I opened up my copy and checked the postmarks. Sure enough, it was
    Challenger that they flew in.

    I wonder what's happened to the value of those stamps since the
    first of the year?

    Several months ago we took some visiting friends over to KSC for
    a tour, which is BY FAR the best tourist value in Florida. We bought
    a few souvenirs while there including a set of refrigerator magnets
    which consist of four shuttles in various configurations. The Columbia
    is in landing configuration with its gear down, the Discovery on
    the transfer 747, an unnamed shuttle has the bay doors open, and
    the Challenger (you guessed it) is in the launch configuration.
