160.0. "CHALLENGER 51-L Crew Found" by ENGGSG::FLIS () Mon Mar 10 1986 06:44

They have found the crew cabin. The remains of some, if not all,
of the astronauts are with-in it.

NASA expects it to take several days to recover the cabin and remains.
The cabin was found in 100 feet of water and is accesable by divers.
It has been reported that some remains have be recovered, but not
yet identified. The discovery was made last Friday and next-of-
kin was being notified over the weekend. One family member,
unidentified, stated that they were not informed of the find untill
they saw it on the news last night.

    A few random notes:

Mutual News said that Judy Resnick's father had not known of the
find till he heard it on the news. The Globe said the same of Ron
    McNair's father.

And finally, there is speculation in the Globe that tape recorders
in cabin, as well as the main computers may provide valuable clues.
(I think the computers use core memory, so the final state of the
memory may be preserved. It would not surprise me if there were
a lot of info about the state of the CPU itself preserved in core
as well, because of the weird
    run-asynchronously-until-you-reach-a-checkpoint nature of the multiple
    processor system.
