FUND SET UP FOR ASTRONAUTS' KIDS
by Regina Boyd,
The Boston Herald
January 30, 1986
A Washington bank and law firm have set up a
non-profit charitable trust to collect funds for
11 children of the astronauts who died in Tues-
day's space shuttle disaster.
"We hope this will be the singular worldwide,
national fund for the children," said Roger Con-
ner, vice president of public affairs at American
Security Bank.
Attorney Delbert Smith, of a Washington-based
law firm which has represented the National Aero-
nautics and Space Administration and other aero-
nautics companies for 15 years, brought the idea
to the bank late Tuesday and helped set up the
trust overnight.
Conditions of the trust will be completed by
tomorrow, said Connor, adding that neither the
bank nor the law firm will charge any admini-
stration fees. Each business has contributed
$1,000.
Though Christa McAuliffe's children are not
included in the trust, they will benefit from a
$1 million insurance policy given to their mother
only days before the flight.
Meanwhile, NASA officials announced that any-
one wishing to send condolences to the famlies of
the astronauts should send them to admini-
stration's offices in Washington D.C.
