Another mildly ironic thing that no one has commented on is that Challenger was carrying the much-delayed 2nd TDRSS satellite. This is the satellite whose first clone's engine misfired, and it was slowly boosted to Clarke orbit using its station-keeping thrusters. This and other problems delayed the 2nd TDRSS launching until yesterday. Burns

Loss of TDRSS-2 will be a problem. However, of the 6 satellites being built by TRW, one was to be an in orbit spare for NASA or Spacecom. Hopefully that will replace TDRSS-2. I visited TRW a while back and there several TDRSS class satellites being readied, one of which (the 4th) was the 'spare'. gary |
