Shuttle Crews for Upcoming Flights Announced
SPACE CENTER, Houston (AP) - Veteran astronaut John W. Young
will command space shuttle flight in August 1986, Johnson Space
Center officials said Thursday.
It will mark Young's seventh spaceflight and third shuttle
flight, said space center spokesman Dave Alter. Young commanded the
first shuttle in 1981 and the ninth in 1983.
The August flight is expected to deploy the Hubble space
telescope, which has a 15-year life in space, Alter said.
Others on the shuttle will be pilot Charles F. Bolden Jr. and
mission specialists Katheryn D. Sullivan, Steven A. Hawley and
Bruce McCandless, Alter said.
Crew members for a rescheduled flight set to blast off in
September 1986 include commander Vance D. Brand and pilot S. David
Griggs. Mission specialists include Robert L. Stewart, Owen K.
Garriott and European Space Agency astronaut Claude Nicollier of
Holland, Alter said.
The payload specialists named to the September 1986 flight will
be Michael Lampton and Byron K. Lichtenberg.
Another mission scheduled for that month is to deploy Intelsat,
an advanced telecommunications satellite to provide 30,000
telephone circuits and circuits for four TV stations. Intelsat is a
Hughes Air Co. of California satellite, Alter said.
Members of that mission will include commander Donald E.
Williams; pilot Michael J. Smith; and mission specialists James P.
Bagian; Bonnie J. Donbar; and Manley L. Carter.
