Rockwell Team Selected For Shuttle Operations Contract

SPACE CENTER, Houston (AP) - A team of companies led by a
Rockwell International subsidiary has been chosen for a $685
million contract to operate space shuttle systems at Johnson Space
Center, NASA announced Thursday.
Rockwell Shuttle Operations Co. and five other companies will be
responsible for maintenance, engineering, flight preparations,
testing and support, the National Aeronautics and Space
Administration said.
Facilities covered by the contract include Mission Control
Center, mission simulators used in training, and computer, avionics
and software testing and production laboratories.
A final contract will be negotiated, but NASA said it will be in
effect for two years beginning Jan. 1, with a two-year extension
option. Follow-on awards could result in a total contract covering
15 years. The contract will include an incentive fee for sound
management and an award fee based on performance.
   Rockwell's proposal reflected a four-year cost of about $685
million, NASA said.
Other members of the team are Bendex Field Engineering Corp. of
Columbia, Md.; System Development Corp. of Camarillo, Calif.;
Omniplan Corp. of Santa Monica, Calif.; RMS Technologies Inc. of
Landover, Md., and System Management American Corp. of Norfolk, Va.
The contract will consolidate under one agreement work now being
performed by 16 companies under 22 contracts.
Four other teams competed against Rockwell.
Rockwell International was a prime contractor during the Apollo
project and for design, development and construction of the space
shuttle.
