66.0. "Listening to Shuttle Missions" by SPAGS::GRIFFIN () Mon Aug 12 1985 14:02

I am considering purchasing a SW radio to listen in to the Shuttle
rebroadcasts, and I have 2 questions:

1. Has anybody in the Greater Maynard Area tried (and succeeded) listening
    in on the flights?

2. Suggestions for equipment (radio/antenna). I'm not interested in
    talking, just listening.

I have on several occasions listened to the rebroadcasts from the
NASA club station in Greenbelt MD. I even monitored Owen Garriot's
transmissions from the PK3 parking lot.

For the rebroadcasts any good short wave receiver will do, although
it should have decent selectivity to sort out the rest of the
amateur community around W3NAN. A model with a digital display
would be ideal, but not necessary, since many general coverage units
place a fairly wide frequency spread on a single "band". My
equipment is all amateur specific making it a little easier.

If the unit has a built in antenna (like a telescoping rod), you
might get away with it. I use a modified 2 meter antenna on the
hf spectrum for listening and have no problems heard the NASA club.
For the direct orbit to ground, I just use the antenna on my 2
meter handie-talkie. For line of sight you almost don't need an
	antenna!
