I just read in VTX News (AP) the shuttles will have the nose gear modified for steering control. This will give the pilot much better control during the landing phase. They also hope this will reduce the brake/tire failure rate. This is to be accomplished by October.

Subject: New Steering System Posted: Thu May 30 20:43:11 1985 NASA announced today that, due to brake problems on all 17 shuttle flights, it is abandoning differential braking for steering the shuttle upon landing. Instead, all four shuttles will be modified, by October, to include a new nosewheel steering system. |
