51.0. "Shuttle CHALLENGER 51-F Mission" by ABLE::JMILLER () Sun May 26 1985 00:17

Dr. Tony England and John-David Bartoe will have on board a 2 meter
VHF transceiver, the same one carried on board a mission over a year
ago by Dr. Owen Garriott. There is talk of taking along a slow scan
T.V. camera for the hook up into the transceiver. The primary sources
in which Dr. England & John Bartoe will be talking to is amateur radio
clubs and schools. You can obtain further information about this
by accessing the RBBS at (603)924-9809. I for one had an excellent
visual siting of STS-9 as it flew over Albuquerque , I hope to repeat
this again. STS-9 was the mission that Dr. Garriott was on.

The last I heard was that the SSTV (Slow-scan Television) was out,
along with an experiment for the 10 meter band. This is due to
both time and money crunches. Also the frequency of the 2 meter
usage is doubtful as the antenna is mounted on a window that is
used for observation/photography and again time constraints on the
	crew itself.

But we'll be there listening on every pass anyhow.

According to the latest QST they are still planning the operation on 2M
which will consist of both voice and SSTV. There will be no 10M operation.
It was indicated early operation will consist mostly of SSTV. Voice will
be limited to clubs who have applied to the ARRL and meet the guidelines.
The downlink frequency is 145.55, the uplink frequencies are unpublished
and will only be given to those groups whose applications are accepted.

As of the bulletin from AMSAT , the mission is on and there will be only
VHF operations as pre-scheduled by the ARRL. AMSAT will be broadcasting
the Keplerian orbital data on the HF frequencies to be announced at a later
date. This will be the people at the Goddard ARS doing the broadcasting.
AMSAT will be updating this information on the 3,850 KHZ (+ or - QRM)
Tuesday nights at 7 pm to 9 pm EDT, this is the AMSAT information Network.
I would advise listening there for the details.
