Subject: Atlantis Delivered to KSC Posted: Sat Apr 13 17:01:22 1985 The space shuttle Atlantis arrived at KSC today, and workers began unmounting it from its jumbo jet host. It will be towed to the OFP for preparation for its maiden voyage this year. Atlantis is the first shuttle capable of launching the new liquid-fueled Centaur upper stage, designed to lift heavy payloads into geosynchronous orbits and launch payloads into deep space trajectories. Currently slated for Centaur launch from the shuttle are the Galileo project to Jupiter and a satellite that will orbit the sun's poles.

Those two flights (Galileo and Solar Polar) are to be launched back to back, no more than four days apart. They will be launched one from each pad and be our first simultaneous dual orbit. This launch was slated for May 86, but may have been pushed back. In June of 86, scientists are going to send up a satellite with three lights on the side. One is green, one yellow and one red. |
