I'm sure this is covered in here somewhere, but I'm not sure what keyword to look under. I read somewhere that there are strings you can place at the end of a post, or in your sig file, that (if honored) will prevent postings from being archived and indexed on the web. I tried a bunch of keywords, looked up "robots", etc., and even tried to dig around in the news. hierarchy. I have to admit, I've never been very good at negotiating the massive volume on the Usenet. Could someone list the magic incantations, or perhaps post a news or web location where I can read about them? Thanks jeb

Don't count on it. Once you've posted, you have got to assume anyone and everyone will have access to your post forever.

I've seen the reference you mean (don't know where just now), and Matt's right in general -- nothing will _prevent_ an article from being archived or indexed. But there is a tag you can provide that will cause a _cooperative_ indexer to _voluntarily_ ignore your post. I believe AltaVista honors the one I saw referenced. It's the honor system, though.

To answer my own question, I've found several sources which suggest you add the string: X-No-Archive: yes to your post or mail. The descriptions I've found say it has to be the last line of the header, or the first line of the post. As .1 and .2 mentioned, its strictly voluntary. Doubtless there are unscrupulous folks out there that will find and use your name no matter what. But every little bit helps. Also, by using the above string on Altavista, I found several post that document numerous ways to help minimize junk mail from usenet posts. Unfortunately most of them involve falsifying your return address, etc. BTW, anyone know if the Netscape newsreader can be configured to include this in the header, instead of having to add it to the sig, and then shuffle it around? jeb |
