2234.0. "Concentrator 500 Upgrade?" by KERNEL::ANSONR () Wed Mar 05 1997 10:09

    Hi,

We plan to upgrade our DECconcentrator 500's firmware to DEFCN version
3.4a on the weekend of March 15/16 (we currently run DEFCN V3.1).

    The concentrator contains :

    1 x 6 port FDDI board
    1 x 4 port FDDI board

The six port card contains of 2 ES/1's, 2 VAX 7000's, 1 Alpha 8400 and
    one
    empty port.

The four port card contains 1 Alpha 8400.

According to the upgrade release notes, I should record all previously
saved nonvolatile settings and restore these settings after the downline
load is completed. However, by connecting a terminal to the concentrator
I can only do a SHOW DEVICE STATUS and SHOW DEVICE CHARACTERISTICS
    which gives the following
    output:

    Characteristics:

    Software Implementation Type DEFCN
    Software Version 3.1
    ROM Implementation Type DEFCN
    ROM Version 1.0

    Status:
    device_state OPERATE
    device broken reason
    NVRAM Failed Flag FALSE
    Device configuration:

FRU Type FRU State FRU ID FRU Rev
    -------- --------- ------ -------
    Controller/Backplane Working N/A 1
4 line Ansi port card Working Slot 1 1
FI card Working Slot 2 0
    NULL Empty Slot 3 0
    Fan Working N/A 0Fan Working N/A 0
OBM UART Card Working N/A 0
    NULL Empty N/A 0

Trying to do a SHOW of anything else, it comes back with NO MANAGEMENT
    CARD.

So, my question is: what nonvolatile settings does upgrading overwrite
and how do I find out what they are currently set as? Do we need to install
    a management card?

    Thanks,

    Rich.
