to better maintain, manage and diagnose FDDI rings I'd like to have the
following included in future versions of our FDDI products:
Request: Implement "sysDescr" MIB-II variable in FDDI/SMT "SIF operation
response" frames.
The ring map feature of a HP FDDI Analyzer can send SIF configuration and
operation requests to the stations on the ring. Below is a printout with
info from the SIF responses.
As an example, Schneider&Koch and the HP include meaningful information in
the SIF operation response "User Field" and the optional "Manufacturer
field". I've seen Wellfleet routers IBM systems and others doing the same.
Non of the DEC stations do that.
With this info, one could easily see what's on the ring, without talking to
different departments or using different snmp management system at larger
(and smaller) customer sites.
Somewhere I read, that the User field was a good place to put the sysDescr
MIB-II object. Here are examples of sysDescr of a DECbridge900MX, DECNIS
and GIGAswitch/FDDI V3.09.
