    Hello!
    
    I need help.
    
    Our customer has a cluster with 2 VAXes. VAX10000 and VAX6000 running
    openvms v6.2 (common disk) decnet pase iv. Network interface FDDI 
    (demfa) on both systems.
    
    Before installing decamds v6.2 the following command under decnet phase iv was
    working correctely on both systems.
    
    ncp> connect node dsv020  (dsv020 is a decserver)
    
    After installing decamds v6.2 and running it, the same command gives
    this error on both systems.
    
    ncp> connect node dsv020
    %system-f-devreqerr, device request error
    
    The image of fxdriver is:

    If we stop decamds on a VAX the command works again.
    
    Through ethernet no problems. It seems coming from the fddi driver
    (fxdriver).
    
    Is This problem known? or should I open an ipmt?

	I'll take a stab at this one. It sounds like to me that your decamds startup procedure is starting up before STARTNET.COM is finished executing. DECnet (NETACP) needs to assign the adapter Mnemonic first before anyone elses grabs its. To check on your VAX6000 do the following: $ SHOW DEVICE XFA /FULL Device FXA0: is online, network device, error logging is enabled, device is a template only. 	>> ncp> connect node dsv020 >> %system-f-devreqerr, device request error Normally, an error like this would happen if the protocol that NCP needed to use (60-02) was already in use (by DECAMDS) (ie. what .-1 said) or if there were too many users of the device already. You would have to look in SDA at what LAN users were started to see what DECAMDS is using and perhaps why the error occurred. Do a SHOW LAN/FULL in SDA to get this data. - Dick

	Rene! Thanks for your help. In fact decamds is not started in the systartup_vms but manualy after the entire cluster is up. The customer is a Bank and its startnet is at the begin of startup. I will take the output of show lan/full and will post it. Thanks again Domenico

	The version of FXDRIVER is the latest from the V6.2 remedial stream. There are no later fixes. The SDA data didn't reveal any problems but it does appear that running DECAMDS should not have made a difference, ie. if you had started up some other protocol, you could have seen the same problem. The next thing to check is the revision of the DEMFA firmware. There was a problem where the startup of user 0 could fail under certain circumstances (and the MOP remote console user is normally assigned index 0). The version you should have is 2.1. You can find out what the version is on the running system by doing these commands in SDA: SDA> SHOW LAN (until you see FXA, just to define the symbol FXA) then, as the following example: SDA> sea/step=byte/len=word fxa;1000 0823 Searching from 95529B80 to 9552AB80 in BYTE steps for 0823... Match at 9552A394 SDA> e 9552A394 FXA+00814: 05140823 "#..." This is version 1.4. - Dick

	Dick! I have found 2 images DEMFA021.SYS;1 and VAX7000_DEMFA021.SYS;1 in PROXY"fal$access"::T2027_FIRM_PUBLIC:[PUBLIC]. The DEMFA021.SYS;1 is for vax 6000 The VAX7000_DEMFA021.SYS;1 is for vax 7000 (i suppose) and for vax 10000 ? Thanks for your answer Domenico

Also, I have no idea what you would do with these files - could they be LFU images? If so, I think you could probably mop boot the VAX7000_DEMFA021 to see if it worked... - Dick
