If we have a vanilla FDDI ring with four DECConcentrator 900's, four
DECSwitch900EF's dual homed between the concentrators and four VAX's
with DEMFA's plug into the concentrators and the cluster stays up -
Should we expect to see any 'ring inits' logged on the MAC counters of
the concentrators?
If a VAX is rebooted how many ring inits would we get? (one when the
micro code is flushed off the DEMFA and one when it gets put back and
the DEMFA starts?) ?
Are ring inits bad? My expectation is so see none in a stable Ring
correct?

This sounds correct to me. There is a ring initialization for any
membership change event. If you are dual-homed then you can plug
and unplug the backup link all day without a ring init.

Ring inits are not necessarily bad. They must be taken into context
with other counters and activity on the ring. On a stable ring you
should have no inits. If you do have inits then you have to hunt around
to see if any members have error counts that could implicate a bad
section of fiber/wire. If nodes are added or removed then you can
expect counts.
