2125.0. "Time to transfer a large file on FDDI." by HGOVC::PATRICKNG () Thu Aug 29 1996 05:49

    Hi,

    We don't have FDDI set up in this site. We like to find out a rough
    figure for how long it take to transfer a 4GB RMS ASCII from VAX 7700 to
    NT ( it could be any O/S).

    If someone has done a large file transfer, please let me know how long
    it takes and how large the file is.

    It is very difficult to guess.

It will take longer than 4GB/12.5MB/s = 320s = 5m20s.

It will vary with the amount of contention.

On a quiet/dedicated set of components, I'd guess maybe 15 minutes?

If you find it is taking longer than 2 hours, you could consider moving it via
tape. A TZ87 has been known to backup 4GB/h. If the NT system can read the
results then sneakernet might win the day. This might clearly not be acceptable.
