FDDI Controllers and IEEE 802.10 Do we envisage supporting this standard in terms of the model for providing compliant security services? - is there support in this product set already? Can anybody suggest contacts or pointers to futher this enquiry? Kind regards all Justin Sheriff

2112.1 | No VLAN support for End Nodes | NETCAD::THOMPSON | Wed Aug 14 1996 14:19 | 10
IEEE 802.10 is the protocol whereby LAN traffic will carry a VLAN identifier, allowing for selective switching of packets with this identifier. At this time, this is not and will not be supported in the FDDI controller device drivers. -Brenda

Thanks Brenda.. So is it fair to say that IEEE 802.10 implementation is technology specific to switching products and as a result it would be very unlikely to support FDDI controllers. I need I guess, to look at GIGAswitch/FDDI & VNswitch? Kind regards Justin
2112.3 | enVISN supports VLAN switching | NETCAD::THOMPSON | Thu Aug 15 1996 14:24 | 15

I need I guess, to look at GIGAswitch/FDDI & VNswitch? No, it is not a technology restriction. VLAN switching could be supported in end nodes, but we do not choose to implement that support at this time. Other products in NPB do support VLAN switching, including those involved in the enVISN architecture. You can consult NPB's homepage at www.networks.digital.com to find out more. -Brenda |
