2096.0. "DEFEA PROBLEM ON NORITAKE (ASRV100A) SYSTEM" by GIDDAY::STANISLAUS () Tue Jul 30 1996 04:31

Also posted in MIKASA notes conference and HUB_MGNT notes conference:
-------------------------------------------------------------------

A remote site engineer reports the following FDDI problem on a new
ASRV1000A install.

As soon as he connects this node (using DEFEA SAS) to an FDDI ring
he gets a lot of "RING INITS RECEIVED" counts (under NCP) logged against other
systems (4 x ASRV1000 Mikasa systems). This happens even when the ASRV1000A
is sitting at the >>> console mode prompt or if the ASRV1000A has OpenVMS
booted with DECnet Phase IV running. If he has the system running DECnet then
this system also logs RING INIT RECEIVED counts just like other systems.

The network runs very very very slow until the ASRV1000A is disconnected
from the ring. Engineer has used another DEFEA, another cable and another port
on the DECconcentrator 900 and also tried a DECconcentrator 500 which happens to
be on the same FDDI ring as the DC900.

We both discussed and we have decided to change the ASRV1000A's mother
board. There is no other EISA board on the system. There are two other PCI
boards on this system, but the fault happens even if both these PCI boards are
removed from the system.

I am the remote engineer on this call. Have found it is not the
AS1000A, but any additional node added to the FDDI causes this problem.
I tried a spare decbidge 620, and a new alphaserver 4100 also cause the
same symptom. Have checked all interfaces on the FDDI and all are
showing the "ring inits received", but none appear to be initiating
    them according to the counters.

    regards
