2093.0. "What is DEClma?" by BIGUN::wills.cao.dec.com::Pinkerton (Coo-ee Digger Wombat Mate) Fri Jul 26 1996 04:08

Anyone,

A customer has found a paragraph in one of our products descriptions
that seems to suggest a feature they would like to use with POLYCENTER.

The paragraph named "Network Manageability" on the DEC FDDI/EISA card
talks about a piece of software that allows "access to SNMP MIB objects
provided by DEClma (local management utility) locally."

Is this "DEClma" a product?, and if so does it work with NetView and SNMP?

The only copy of the paragraph topic internally I could find is at:
http://npbww2.hpn.lkg.dec.com/dr/adapfdi/descrip/defea.txt

I will cross post in an Netview conference as well.

TIA

>>Is this "DEClma" a product?, and if so does it work with NetView and SNMP?

DEClma stands for "Digital Local Management Application". It was a
utility I wrote and ported to the NetWare Server and SCO UNIX
environments. It basically reads FDDI SNMP MIB and other information
from the DEFEA or DEFPA adapter and presents it in ASCII text format.

DEClma is local. It has no concept of the SNMP protocol or network
management applications like Netview. It's largely based on RFC 1512
(IETF FDDI SNMP MIB) and the Interface group from RFC 1213, with a
couple of added commands that are DEFEA and DEFPA port interface
specific. Since DECLMA.NLM is an NetWare Loadable Module, you can run
RCONSOLE.EXE from a NetWare client and load and run the utility.
Otherwise, you'll need to be at the server System Console prompt.

There is a DECSNMP.NLM SNMP co-agent available that would work with
Netview and other SNMP-based management applications. DECSNMP.NLM
is an SNMP co-agent that works with NetWare's SNMP.NLM to provide query
and set commands for the RFC 1512 MIB objects on DEFEA and DEFPA
adapters. By loading and configuring DECSNMP.NLM, SNMP.NLM, and either
TCP/IP or IPX, you can remotely manage the DEFEA and DEFPA adapters
from any SNMP-based network management application that understands RFC
1512. Fetch the latest DEFEA or DEFPA network management diskette
(1.0) for more information on DECSNMP.

Thanks Larry

It seems that it is easier to find information on our products that we
"sell" rather than products that we "give away" or package.

We thought that we could sell DEClma, and since found out it is free.
I tracked down the manual from your pointer and found lots more info.

Cheers

Well, that's a tremendous ego boost to think that someone would pay $
    for that application. Thank you.

By the way, all of the network management and related applications for
Digital's network interface controllers are free. They include:

DECLMA - Local Management Application for DEFEA and DEFPA adapters
(NetWare Server and SCO UNIX supported)
DECBLAST - DOS-based firmware upgrade utility for DEFEA and DEFPA
    		   adapters
DECSNMP - SNMP Co-Agent that supports RFC 1512 on DEFEA and DEFPA
    		   (NetWare Server supported)
RFC1514 - SNMP Co-Agent that supports RFC 1514 on EtherWORKS
    		   controllers (NetWare Server supported)
RFC1643 - SNMP Co-Agent that supports RFC 1643 on EtherWORKS
    		   controllers (NetWare Server supported)
NICWORKS - Windows NT application that provides local management
of Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, and FDDI controllers. Comes
in two versions (Ethernet and FDDI).

We also have other SNMP co-agents for Windows platforms, MIF files for
    DMI support, etc.

    Regards,
       Larry
