2086.0. "DECconcentrator 900Th and DEFPA-UA cable length limit - Isn't it 100 metres ?" by GIDDAY::STANISLAUS () Thu Jul 11 1996 23:29

I am seeing the same problem as note 1970 in this conference.

When the customer uses a 10 metre cable, he has no problem. But when
he uses a say an 84 metere cable, there was the same problem as mentioned in
note entry 1970 in this conference.

We defintely know the 84 metre cable is a proper CAT 5 cable and is
defintely within spec.

Could it be that the DC900TH and/or the DEFPA-UA have trouble driving
cables greater than some length ? The CDDI spec. I think is 100 metres.

Alphonse

Note 1970 is re-posted here just to save you going into that note, but
my hub doesn't have all of the modules mentioned in note 1970.

    Hi,

on customer site there is the following configuration:

    DEChub900 V4.1.0
    DECswitch900EF	V1.5.2	bridge_1
    DECswitch900EF	V1.5.2 bridge_2
    DECrepeater900TM
    DECrepeater900TM
    DECrepeater900TM
    DECrepeater900TM
    DECrepeater900TM
    DECconcentrator900TH V3.1.1 slot 1

    FDDI:
bridge_1 "ring in" - backplane FDDI - bridge_2 "ring out"
                                |
                                |
                                |
                     DECconcentrator900TH
                     "Dual ring internal to hub"
                                |
                                | BN25H
                                |
                       DEFPA-UA V2.46
                      AlphaServer 1000

    Problem:
First the status LED on the Con-Port and on the DEFPA Board is green.
After a few seconds the Con-Port is yellow, the DEFPA Board is
blinking green. Again after a few seconds - the same again. On the
DEFPA I can see the following status:
green	Link state On ring running
    		Physical Port state	In use
    		Reject Reason No reason
Ring error reason	Ring init received
green/yell	Link state On ring Initializing
    		Physical Port state Starting
    		Reject Reason Remote Reject
Ring error reason Ring Init received
yellow	Link state Off fault recovery
    		Physical Port state Starting
    		Reject Reason Remote Reject
Ring error reason Directed Beacon Received

In "green"-state the DEFPA and (!!!) the Concentrator are seeing
bridge_1 as there UNA. After a few seconds you can see a "NoNIF" for
the DEFPA, and in "yellow"-state the ring map is ok.

Does somebody has any idea to get the DEFPA running?

    Regards
    Franz Veith @SUO

    Things i'd check:

    1) The 85m cable used is Cat 5 behind-the-wall cable and not patch cord
(a common mistake). Patch cord shall not be longer than 10m (EIA/TIA-568
and ISO 11801 specs define the cable lengths).

    2) If the DC900 has the DEFXU-AA modPMD modules, swap one of them with a
DEFXU-BA (or later) module and use this port. The DEFXU-BA is a more
robust design than the -AA. (The DEFPA-UA uses the same design as the
DEFXU-BA so i believe the DEFPA to be robust as well.)

TP-PMD uses the EIA/TIA and ISO specs to define the cable plant. These
specs say a max of 100m of Cat 5 cable that is built from 90m of
    behind-the-wall and 2 5m patch cords.

BTW, please (oh please please please!) stop calling this product
"CDDI". We do *not* build CDDI equipment! CDDI was a competing
technology that provided FDDI over copper wire. Our equipment is
interoperable with the ANSI TP-PMD standard, not CDDI.
