2044.0. "DEFPA hangs on Win95 Celebris GL" by 12368::"[email protected]" (Aaron Stout) Wed May 15 1996 21:36

Has anyone successfully run a DEFPA on a Celebris GL (ST) system?
My systems seems to "lock up" when attempting to use the network. I've
tried the new 2.52 driver and no difference. The LED on the DEFPA remains
lit, but the mouse pointer either freezes or disappears and the only recovery
seems to be a power cycle. One thing that doesn't seem correct is that
I can go into "setup" and disable the on board ethernet controller, but
Windows 95 adds the ethernet controller back after each reboot. I can
remove the protocols and the system will work until I start using the network.

I don't know for sure that the DEFPA is the problem, but I only have problems
when it is active. I am running the graphics system in 24 bit color @ 1280 X
1024 on the new 21 inch PCXAV-ZB monitor. I did not receive a special
driver for this monitor, could this be part of the problem?

Any pointers would be appreciated. I looked at earlier entries for this
problem and didn't find this specific problem described, although there
seem to be quite a few entries regarding these controllers. The problem
occurs within minutes of using any network application.

    What rev of the DEFPA do you have? I have a customer who had a problem
    with a Digital PC and this was found to be a problem with the DEFPA
    which requires rev E02.

    The new E02 rev'ed DEFPA starting shipping the first week in May.

    =====================================================================

          PROBLEM:
          -------

          Product: PCI to FDDI Adapter Card (DEFPA)

          The DEFPA-AA/DA/UA may exhibit a problem in PC's with the Intel
          Triton Host-to-bridge chip.

          The INTEL Triton Host Bridge chip has a problem in its arbitor
    logic
          that exposes a problem in the DEFPA-AA/DA/UA. DEFPAs installed in
          platforms with the Triton chip may cause the DEFPA and PC to hang
    or
          experience a degradation of performance.

          NOTE: THIS PROBLEM OCCURS IN INTEL TRITON BASED PLATFORMS ONLY!!

          VERIFICATION THAT PLATFORM IS TRITON BASED:
          ------------------------------------------

          Determination that the PC uses the Triton chip is made as
    follows:

          There is an executable program, PCIVIEW.EXE, that scans the PCI
    bus
          and list all of the devices attached to the bus. This file can be
          copied from:

          NPSS::PUBLIC$DSK:[INTERCHANGE]PCIVIEW.EXE

          Load and execute this file from DOS.

          Look for the device type that specifies the "HOST BRIDGE"

          The print out format is as follows:

          Device Type = Host Bridge
          Classcode=60000, BUS = 0,Device = 0,BUS Master = Enabled,Slot =
    Enabled
          Vendor ID = 8086, Device ID = 122D, Revision ID = 1, Interrupt = 0
          IOport = 0, Memory = 0

          If HOST BRIDGE Vendor ID is 8086 and the Device ID is 122D, you
    have
          the INTEL Triton Bridge chip in that PC.

          PRODUCT AFFECTED:
          -----------------

          Option REV Board Part Number REV
          ----------------------------------------------------------------
          DEFPA-AA   A01, B01         54-22499-02             C01,D01
          DEFPA-DA   A01, B01         54-22499-01             C01,D01
          DEFPA-UA   A01, B01         54-22499-03             C01,D01

          Note: the DEFPA-MA (54-24275-01) does not have this problem.

          SOLUTION:
          ---------

          A new module revision (5422499-01/02/03 Rev E01) will be
    available
          from manufacturing by May 17, 1996.

          WHAT TO DO WHEN A CUSTOMER HAS THE TRITON PROBLEM:
          --------------------------------------------------

          1. Verify that the customer has a Triton based Platform.

          2. Order FRU revision per the table below.

          Note: There is a very limited number of the new revison modules
          available until mid May 1996. Please contact the NPS Hotline
          for assiatance until the new revison is available.

          EMAIL NPSS::HELPDESK
          FAX 508-486-5165, DTN 266-5165

          Minimum FRU revision for DEFPA's in Triton based platforms must
    be as

          follows.

          Option REV Board Part Number REV
          -------------------------------------------------
          DEFPA-AA    C01         54-22499-02           E01
          DEFPA-DA    C01         54-22499-01           E01
          DEFPA-UA    C01         54-22499-03           E01

          POSSIBLE "SHORT TERM" WORKAROUNDS (UNTIL MID-MAY 1996):
          --------------------------------------------------------

          1. If the customer has EISA slots available in his platform, a
    DEFEA
             FDDI/EISA adapter can be used.

          2. If the customer can use UTP media, the DEFPA-MA (DAS UTP) can
    be used.
