2004.0. "802.10 VLAN TAGGING" by WPOCS1::wpopc3.wpo.dec.com::EMMANUEL () Tue Apr 02 1996 04:11

Hi I have been asked the following question from a customer can any help.

Thanks Peter.

In order to ascertain network connectivity of both MARVIN (8200) and
ZAIPHOD (2100) I need to know from Digital that the 2 servers have support for
the following features if not what alternate compatible features do they
support and their availability.

FDDI NIC for 8200/2100 does it support IEEE ratified 802.10 vlan tagging for a
direct FDDI attachment ?

CDDI NIC support for the same purpose ?

    I have no idea how the FDDI NIC is impacted by 802.10. Perhaps one of
    the ATM-knowledgeable folks can chime in. If the FDDI hardware does
    support this, you can rest assured that there wouldn't be a difference
    between the fiber and UTP (what you're calling "CDDI") options.

2004.2More Cisco FUD26015::JOYPerception is realityTue Apr 02 1996 14:2510
    IEEE 802.10 has NOT ratified any VLAN tagging methods....802.10 HAS
    ratified a standard for shared LAN and MAN security and encryption of
    data. Cisco is trying to force the 802.10 working group to use 802.10
    tagging since that is what they use in their Fusion architecture. So it
    sounds like Cisco is slinging some more FUD to this customer. In fact,
    Cisco is probably the main cause for causing a roadblock in the VLAN
    standardization process.
