2002.0. "DEFPA-AU in alpha200/166 openVMS 6.2" by NETRIX::"[email protected]" (Steven Freke) Mon Apr 01 1996 15:45

Folks

I have the following setup. Customer has a 900mx concentrator, and three alpha's
one being the boot node, and the remaining two being satellites. The bootnode
appears to work OK over FDDI, and when the satellites boot over ethernet all is
OK. Put the two satellites on the MX with 3 UTP PMDs,a nd the satellites are
unable to boot into the cluster. They get as far as the message to say that
they have been loaded from xxxxx, but then they just hang.

The LED status on the DEFPA is when the systems are at the >>> the LED is on
solid green, indicating a complete connection. When you start the boot
process the LEDS change to flashing green, indicating a connection in progress
or no cable attached. I say LEDS because we tried to plug the boot node directly
into the satellite, using the same cable, so in effect you had a point to point
connection, no luck here either.

The cable is a BN25H-x equivilent, I have check the pinouts, and the are
correct. OPENVMS 6.2 for AXP. Anybody got any ideas.

There isn't any boot support in VMS for the DEFPA until V6.2-1H1 (and
then only for 2100 type systems, or at least thats what V6.2-1H1 is
supposed to run on). Its also been tested (once) with the 8400 which
worked.  I don't know about 1000s or AS 200, 255, 400 - there is support
in the boot drivers but I've never tried it. It will be fully validated
in the V7.1 timeframe.

2002.2Another query regarding FDDI bootingKERNEL::ELCOCKWThu Apr 04 1996 05:5113
Dick,

I have read your previous reply to this note and I have a further query. I have got a customer who has at present
got a three node cluster consisting of a 7610, 6410 and an Alpha 4275. He wants to add a storage works disk system
to the FDDI cluster and have the two VAXs booting over the FDDI ring. The customer is currently running version
6.1 of VMS.

Would this kind of config. be unsupported in the same way as Steve's original configuration?

Many thanks in advance for any light which you could shed on this.

VAXes don't boot over FDDI. But if you have a 10-100 bridge you could boot
the VAXes into the cluster via their Ethernet adapters.
