in the following customer configuration , we have a strange problem of 
the DEFPA losing its mac address ( all going to 00-00-00-00-00-00 ) during 
normal system operation: this is detected by looking at MC LANCP sho conf 

configuration is :
alpha axp openvms 6.2 with latest axp_lan patches and PCI DEFPA SAS RJ45 latest
firmware ( 2.46 ) 
connected to 
fddi decconcentrator 900 MX with latest firmware 3.2.2 ;  RJ45 connectors ;


this is a axp cluster with server 2100 with EISA card ( no problem ) and 
3 stations PCI card : the problem can occur on any of the 3 stations so we 
dont suspect hardware fault on the card 

as anyone encountered the same problem ?

is there something new about the sys$fwdriver and "control timeout" problem ?

it happens a customer of mine  has got the same problem than the preceding 
replies ; i did enter it as note 1990 as the symptom perceived by the customer 
was lost of the cluster connection and from lancp , address going to 
00-00-00-00-00-00  ,  and as i've gone a lot further , 
it is more detailed below  :

More details : 

i did some investigation in the customer configuration  and uncovered the
 same problem as described in this note with errorlog messages as
"fatal error detected on datalink" and also , as it is a cluster , 
"pea0 : port has closed virtual circuit" , as cluster switches from FDDI to 
Ethernet ; 

this problem can occur randomly on any of the 3 alphastations with DEFPA card
 , and never happens on the alphaserver with DEFEA card ;
plus the fddi driver sys$fwdriver can failed either at boot time , or during
 normal system  operation  ( the problem  can happen 1 time per day ) 
the only workaround is to reboot the station ( power off / power on ); 

i dont suspect the DEFPA cards as i discovered the following behaviour : 

- i power on the station :  the DEFPA inits and set up the link with the 
concentrator900mx ( port is up from  900mx , green led on from DEFPA ) ;
- i boot openvms :   if there is a "control timeout" , the card deactivates 
the link ( port down , led off ) and SDA gives the results below ; 
if there is no problem , the link stays up ; 
- if openvms up and running , and there is a "control timeout" problem , 
card deactivates link , errorlog messages and SDA results as below and lancp
shows address all 0's 
- i shutdown OpenVMS ( the link being down ) and keep the station power on 
, and then , the card re-inits itself and the link goes up again !!!

so this is why i suspect rather a problem with the sys$fwdriver 

below , is results of SDA after problem at boot time , but the symptoms are 
the same if it happened during normal operation ( besides the FDDI counters 
being incremented ) 
i have highlighted what is different from a "normal result" with >>>>>>> lines
