1937.0. "FDDI Distances... (supported!)" by SCASS1::GALVIN (The Energizer Bunny's Trainer...) Mon Jan 29 1996 18:16

    	FDDI Distances (multi-mode vs. single-mode)

Question came up about the distance(s) we support for mult and/or
single mode fiber... Can anyone point me at technical information?
What do we quote for a distance before a repeating device is
    required...?

    thanks,

The most quoted numbers I've seen are 2Km vs. 40Km, but I believe we
can push much further with our single-mode fiber gear.

Larry is correct on our quoted figures. The 2.0 km distance for MMF
comes right out of the ANSI PMD spec. We know that our gear meets the
2km requirement with some margin. We have not tested other FDDI
vendors equipment enough to assure any more than the 2km standard. And
while we control our optical components quality, we don't have that
control over other vendors stuff. So if you are in a mixed vendor
environment, sticking with the standard is a safe approach.

Our SMF product will really do 60 km, if our product is on both ends of
the link, and you keep below 22 dB of loss in the cable plant.

MMF FDDI products can do better than 2km, in cases where our product is
on both ends of the link, and some additional loss margin is reserved.
I'd prefer to leave it that ambiguous, because I'd like to see the link
details before we talk seriously about >2km links.
