1902.0. "FDDI to ATM" by HGOVC::SOONDERAM () Wed Dec 13 1995 04:15

    Re: GIGAswitch FDDI/ATM

    Questions:
    ---------

    1.	In a marketing pamphlet, a Router is used to connect FDDI to an ATM
Switch. Where can I find more information on this Router?

    2. Also, apparently we have an ATM Interface card for the
GIGAswitch/FDDI to connect a FDDI LAN to an ATM WAN. Where can I find
more information on this Interface card?

    3. Do we have a note_conference on the subject of ATM (Asynchronous
    Transfer Mode) products.

    4. Do we have products that support FDDI LAN Emulation over ATM?

Look in the GIGAswitch/FDDI System AGL-2 Manager's Reference Guide.

    re: .4

It looks unlikely that an FDDI LAN emulation will be developed. In the
April 95 ATM Forum, a proposal to create one was not accepted. However,
it is possible to do FDDI client to ATM client communication using the
Ethernet LAN emulation spec since we know both sides of the equation.
We know how manipulate FDDI frames into Ethernet frames (and
vice-versa) and it has been defined how to manipulate ATM frames into
Ethernet frames (and vice versa). So if you build a device with all
three technologies on it, the only thing FDDI sees are Ethernet frames
and the only thing ATM sees are Ethernet frames and the world is at
    peace with itself.

This also eliminates the problem of getting operating system providers
to add yet another ATM LAN layer to their operating system. So, in my
opinion, the fact we didn't get a FDDI LAN emulation defined was the
best result. We don't have to commiserate about this or that operating
system not having FDDI ATM LAN emulation support.

There is a project within Digital which is working on this. It's
supposed to be in the PID. I suggest contacting Pete SCHOOL::DUNBECK
about the project. I've successfully used this pitch to disarm
customers and consultants about not making the right decision about ATM
given the fact that they need a high speed backbone now, ATM really
isn't ready, but won't I lose ALL my FDDI investment whenever ATM is
ready because there is no FDDI ATM LAN emulation spec? I usually talk
about this for about 10 minutes and then we don't talk ATM anymore. We
talk about implementing a network and solving the business problem the
    customer has.
