Config - Two AXP 8400 systems each with a DEMFA (F/W ver 2.0). Each
DEMFA is connected to a DECconcentrator 900MX's M port. The two AXPs called
nodes SYD1 and SYD2.
About once a week or so SYD2's DECnet Circuit bounces down and up again.
LAT users also loose connection. SYD1 has never done it so far.
VMS error log entry shows DEMFA RECEIVE FORMAT ERROR as indicated below:

VMS version is 6.2

I meant to ask in .0 what is MAC LOST COUNT on FDDI. Is it when the
Frame comes back to the sending station without the A bit set ? As you will
notice there are thousands and thousands of MAC lost count on node SYD2, but
none on SYD1.
Since the FXDRIVERS where the same on both systems we have changed the
DEMFA on SYD2. We have to wait a week or so before we will know the result.
We are also getting about 10 or 11 RING INITS received logged by the
DEMFAs of both AXP 8400 systems.

AXP 8400 DEMFAs. I missed the ords "per day" in .1.

Maybe I missed something but I didn't see a receive
format error in the error log. You had a fatal
hardware internal error.

This is a problem that has been around for awhile now.
Until engineering can determine the root cuase of the
problem it is suggested that you back down to 1.4 of
the DEMFA code. If you can't back down then I suggest
that you contact the Network Support group or the
VMS support group for an alternative solution.
Mike Johnson (NPSS::JOHNSON) would be a good place to start.

Also, the internal hardware error appears to be due to a CNS
hardware fault. It's possibly bad hardware that caused that
error.

Bad hardware MAY be the problem. However, there are plenty of ways to
confuse an adapter sufficiently so that it declares a hardware error
even though there isn't really a hardware problem. (Trust me on this!)
It would be most helpful if device drivers could pump the error log info
out of the crashed fddi corner and publish the latest crash dump along
with "FATAL HARDWARE INTERNAL ERROR". Upline dumps are used to great
advantage in routers and sync comms adapters; they would be equally
useful in this context. Although the adapters I know of don't have a
full-fledged upline dump capability, the Error_Log_Get information is
quite valuable.
Attached to this reply is a further breakdown of the errors covered by
the "FATAL HARDWARE" syndrome. If the rest of the Error_Log was
available then we could know which CNS code caused the halt. (Also, we
could see lots of queue indexes and register settings. See also 1833.7)

When CNS declares a hardware fault the PC in the crash dump is virtually
useless. It points to the message task and not to the ISR where the fault
was declared. So you have to rely on the other numbers in the crash.
