1804.0. "DEFEA-DA Halts" by CGOOA::DANYLUK () Tue Sep 12 1995 20:00

I have a customer with the following configuration:

The network is made up of 2 Gigaswitchs acting as the
central switching point that connects 18 FDDI rings, on
two of the rings are located servers, I beleive there are
about 10 servers on each of the rings. The servers are compact
servers running Netware 4.11, and using the Digital EISA FDDI
controller in the Dual attached mode (defea-da). The following
is the situation that is occuring.

About every 4 or 5 weeks one of the servers will all
of a sudden go to %100 utilization, after some time they are
able to get control of the console, at this time the driver has
reported that the DEFEA-DA has halted, with a halt code of 6, this
code I have been told is because the defea had seen a DMA error
some where is the system. This same sequence of events has been
seen on about 6 servers and on both server FDDI rings. At this time
Novell, compact and Digital cannot find a cause, if anyone has
seen any such errors or has any idea's they would be muchly
    	appreciated.

At this time I do not have the exact driver and firmware
revision of the DEFEA-DA, but the customer tells me they are at the
latest revs, but that info will be available.

I am also looking for reference sites that are using the
DEFEA in the dual attach mode with similiar configurations, the
customer is asking if anybody else is seeing any problems with
    	the EISA FDDI card.

And last but not least I am looking for a pointer to
exactly what revs of firmware and driver have been certified
in teh above configurations using netware.

I assume you mean NetWare 4.10.

The firmware revisions for DEFEA are as follows:

    	Revision 1 DEFEA's (54-21497-0X)
    		Latest FW Revision: 1.3

    	Revision 2 DEFEA's (54-21503-0X)
    		Latest FW Revision: 2.46

The firmware upgrade kit containing a DOS-based utility and both of
these images can be found in

    	KALI::PCDRIVERS:[DEFEA.RELEASE]FEFW240.ZIP

In that same directory there is the latest driver kit (FEKIT240.ZIP).
This kit contains the NetWare 4.10 certified DEFEA.LAN driver (v2.24).

We have seen the DMA errors occur on Revision 2 DEFEA's that are still
at v2.3 firmware and not yet upgraded. The error occurs under heavy
network load when the adapter starts receive overrunning. As far as I
know, no Intel system-based customers have seen this problem, but it
has been reported by customers running OpenVMS and Digital UNIX on
Alpha. At any rate, upgrading the firmware to v2.46 has alleviated
    this problem.

As for other DMA errors, there are any number of reasons including bus
master transactions that get terminated prematurely and descriptor
entry fetches that are corrupted. Both of these examples are not
likely to occur and generally indicate a problem with the adapter in
that system or the system configuration. Moving the cards to different
slots or disabling various caching options have been known to alleviate
    these symptoms.

Thanx for the response, does anyone out there know of large
sites using the DEFEA-DA in teh similiar configuration that
are running without the problem metioned.
