Hi,
I have a customer with the following setup:
Alphaserver 2100/400 running Digital Unix V3.2A with an EISA FDDI module
(DEFEA) acting as an NFS server. NFS clients include a DEC 4000 and a
DEC 7000. All three are connected to a DEC Concentrator 500. I am
currently investigating an intermittent problem whereby the system load
will increase significantly without any obvious reasons and the vmstat
output will show about 90% system time usage. When the problem occurred
the last time, I noticed the following in the messages file.
What does the following "Ring initialized" messages mean ? What could be
the causes ? Is this an indication of an hardware error ?
Will it cause network performance problems ?
Any advice is appreciated !
Thanks,
Lim Hin Siong

| Ring inits are normal (assuming you aren't getting dozens per second) and
happen whenever a system attach or dettaches from the ring.

If you are worried about hardware failure, then you should use
netstat -I fta0 -s to get more information. This will give
you datalink error count.
I think you have a problem on the ring rather than
with fta0.
