1763.0. "TP FDDI cable pinout" by CSC32::RA_HALL () Tue Aug 01 1995 20:00

Does anyone have the pinout for the DEFTA-UA and the DEFPA twisted
    pair FDDI controllers.
It appears that the two manuals EK-DEFPA-IN A04 page A-4 and
EK-DEFT2-IN A01 page B-2 are in error as far as the cable pinout. They
don't appear to match up to the BN25H or BN26S cables that are called for
    in the network buyers guide.
I can not locate either manual for reference. I am going by what a
customer is reading to me. The pinout he is reading me is as follows.

    1---3
    2---6
    3---1
    4---5
    5---4
    6---2
    7---8
    8---7

This would equate to a BN24F cable, which is for standard twisted
    pair not TP FDDI.
I would like to associate signals with the BN25H pinout so as to
    see the difference.

    Thanks

I believe that for the TP-PMD interface:

    pin 1 = tx+
    pin 2 = tx-
    pin 7 = rx+
    pin 8 = rx-

and for the BN25H (TP-PMD Cat 5 cable)

    1 --- 7
    2 --- 8
    3 --- 3
    4 --- 4
    5 --- 5
    6 --- 6
    7 --- 1
    8 --- 2

    Does this help?

1763.2confused!!CSC32::RA_HALLThu Aug 03 1995 11:2521
Thanks Jeannie, but now I am really confused. The cable reference
guide that I have shows both the BN25H and the BN26S pinout as follows.

    1--8
    2--7
    3--6
    4--5
    5--4
    6--3
    7--2
    8--1

If the pinout shown in .1 is correct, and I have no reason to think
it is not, then this means that my cable reference guide as well as the
owner manuals for the products is wrong. I am concerned about the
product owner manuals mentioned in 1763.0. If these manuals are wrong
then we are going to have a lot of customer calls about this. I cannot
verify this as I cannot find the manuals in the center.

    thanks

1763.3.1 has correct pinoutNETCAD::MELARAGNIThu Aug 03 1995 13:1517
The BN25H and BN26S are pinned out as shown in .1. I have verfied this
via the latest version of the Open DECconect Applications Guide.

The pinout shown in .0 is for 10BaseT. I have seen this error in other
    manuals as well.

p.s., For those who find tech trivia interesting:

FWIW, the cable pinout shown in .2 *would* work, but it's not "ideal".
TP-PMD can tolerate inverted polarities of TX and RX. That is, If TX+
and TX- are swapped the link will still work. It's the nature of
the line encoding (MLT-3). The other 4 pins (3,4,5,6) are not used by
    TP-PMD are are don't-cares.

    Re: .2

    Ray,

Please check your copy of the DEFPA manual again to verify that the
pinout matches what's expected. We pulled the pinout from the Open
DECconnect catalog as well as checked with HW engineers like Bill to
verify that it's correct. It's my understanding that the pinouts ARE
correct in the DEFPA manual, so please let me know if you believe
    otherwise.

    Regards,
       Larry
