In the Systems and Options catalog (supplement) for the AlphaServer 1000 4/233, the PCI cards are listed, but an asterisk indicates that they are "supported as data devices only." The EISA devices (DEFEA instead of DEFPA) have no such restriction. What is the difference? Are the PCI devices supported for DECnet and UCX? Provided I have the option of choosing, anyone care to comment on the use of the EISA FDDI cards versus PCI? Thanks in advance, Jim Allbery

Jim, I was curious about that text when I first read it. My guess (and it's only a guess, mind you) is that it means that network boot over DEFPA is not yet supported. I believe the DEFEA is supported as a network boot device through the console on select Alpha systems. This requires a console driver to initialize and communicate with the adapter. It's possible that the DEFPA being a relatively new option (FRS in 1/95) is not yet fully supported in the console and can only be used for networking functions under an operating system (UNIX, OpenVMS, NT, etc). - Larry |
