1732.0. "DEFEA firmware regression possible ?" by MUGGER::WHITHAM (Run over whilst crossing the information superhighway...) Fri Jun 30 1995 15:58

As part of upgrading a sable system to an EV5 and V3.2b of OSF/1, the
LFU upgrades the DEFEA firmware to 1.6 - is it possible to downgrade
this firmware if we run into problems ?

I have to assure the customer that either we can downgrade it, or
replace it, or assure them that OSF/1 V2.1b will definitely support
a "firmware upgraded" FDDI card (i.e. if they need to restore their
current system back after the firmware has been done).

The version you list (1.6) is not correct. The current firmware versions
    for DEFEA are:

    	DEFEA Revision 1 (54-21497-0X) - version 1.3
    	DEFEA Revision 2 (54-21053-0X) - version 2.46

If you've purchased your DEFEA within the last two years or so, it's
    likely a revision 2 controller.

I've checked, some systems have Rev 1 cards and Rev 2 cards

But the Rev 1 cards we have are at firmware V1.2

There doesn't seem to be anything in the OSF/1 release notes that says
we must use F/W Rev 1.3 on FDDI cards, but the release notes for the
LFU says that the supported frimware is 1.3 (so I guess as OSF/1 for
the EV5 needs the V4.0 LFU which needs V1.3 DEFEA f/w, then OSF/1 needs
    the V1.3 DEFEA)

So, question still stands - how do I downgrade ? - or can I assure the
customer that upgrading the FDDI card will still work on earlier
versions of LFU firmware and OSF/1.

Typo on the revision 2 DEFEA. I should have entered:

    	DEFEA Revision 1 (54-21497-0X) - version 1.3
    	DEFEA Revision 2 (54-21503-0X) - version 2.46

There is no reason to downgrade your DEFEA firmware. Simply put, the
drivers (whether OpenVMS, UNIX, or PC-based) do not put dependencies
that require one firmware revision or another. This may not be true of
system (console) firmware, but is generally true for FDDI adapter
firmware. Please upgrade to 1.3 or 2.46 (as appropriate) when
    possible.

If your customer really needs to downgrade, I'll get you a pointer
to a firmware file that LFU can read to 'downgrade' the adapter...

Please send me mail if you need it..

but as stated rev 1.3 is just fine to run....
