1723.0. "defea, osf/1 v3.2, DMA Error" by MUNICH::SCHWEMMER () Wed Jun 21 1995 14:17

    Hello,

could somebody please give me an explanation for the following
        scenario:

(I couldn't find any info about that in various notes-files and
I'm not very experienced in FDDI technology).

        Our customer has a 2100 4/200-system with OSF/1 V3.2-214/384 MB
and DEFEA FDDI Module, hardware rev. 2, firmware rev. 2.3.
Yesterday it happened 2 times that the machine seemed to hang
and on console our customer has seen a lot of "receive overrun"
messages. Unfortunately we don't have the exact error-messages,
because after the reboot the relevant syslogfiles were empty.
He didn't notice the messages. There was also nothing to
        find in errlogfile.

But we have found some information in the file kern.log.

        fta0: Link Unavailable.
        fta0: Link Available.
        fta0: Ring initialized
        fta0: Halted.
        fta0: Halt Reason: DMA Error

those messages occurred a few times per day.
        at 07:07:09, 11:13:32, 11:14:56, 11:14:57, 11:19:26, 11:19:27

        the partner is a cisco-concentrator.
as protocols they use tcp/ip and netbeui (pathworks server v5.0-f).

        %netstat -I fta0 -s shows a lot of "system buffers unavailable".

Could somebody please shed a light on this?

    Thanks for any help,

    Mathilde Schwemmer,
    MCS Munich.

    Hello Thomas,

you're really fast! I've entered the question in the sable-conference.

    Thanks for the hint.

    Regards, Mathilde.
