Are you near the system? If the green LED goes out on the back of the
DEFPA, then it's off the ring. If the green LED is solid green, then
the card is still active and is on the ring. If the green LED is
blinking green, then the card is still active, but is NOT currently on
the ring. Aside from checking with the driver developer, this is the
most accurate way of visually determining the behavior of the adapter
in those different states.

| Larry,
thanks for your quick reply.
I will be at customer site tomorrow and I will check it , but the customer says
that the system gets off the ring and don't repeat any more.
What I was looking for is the rigth beavior of the board/driver rather then the
real one.
So, if someone could tell me what should be the rigth beavior would be nice.
From the user manual, it says that the board only needs a OBR in the case of a
power down or a card failure, but that doesn't answer my question.
best regards,
//Manuel

| The VMS driver resets the DEFPA on system shutdown.

| So, it means that will always lose the repeat capability ?
Will it be changed in a near future?

As you can tell from Dick's reply (1707.3), the OpenVMS driver takes
the adapter off-line during system shutdown. This is consistent with
our other drivers (NT, SCO UNIX, NetWare) that take the adapter off the
network during system shutdown or driver unload.
If the system in question is repeatedly shutdown, then I would
recommend to the customer that they do NOT place it on the dual-ring,
but rather, connect it as an end node to an FDDI concentrator. If they
do intend to put it on the dual ring, and the node is often shutdown,
then they'll need to either live with the wrapped dual ring
configuration or possibly invest in an OBR to keep the dual ring alive.
