1706.0. "Optical By-pass Switch needed for FDDI" by CSOA1::KRAL () Mon Jun 05 1995 15:55

    I am currently responding to an RFP where the customer is looking to
    install 4 FDDI rings to cover a large steel plant. They are proposing
    to connect each ring at two points. Each connection will be dual
    attached to both rings which will provide redundancy between rings. If
    one FDDI Backbone Router goes down the other connection will maintain a
    connection to the other rings.

    Do you see anything wrong with this configuration, or do you have
    suggestions for improvement?(Sorry for the limited detail! You can call
    me and discuss this further.)

    They are also requesting that we provide optical by-pass switches in
    front of both A & B ports of the FDDI Routers. I need a recommendation
    and contact for a manufacturer who can provide this technology. Also,
    I need to know if Digital is currently supporting these devices on a
    maintanence contract.

    I need this info ASAP to meet a very aggressive timeframe. Thanks in
    advance!

    The only company I know of that makes FDDI OBR's is AMP. You may also
    want to check your DECconcentrator 900MX or DECnis documentation to see
    if they mention specific part numbers. Further, you may want to check
    with the Open DECconnect folks to see if they have an approved vendor
    for OBR's.

    I contacted AMP (as I had a need for OBR information as well) at
    1800/522-6752 and got information from them on their line of FDDI Dual
    Bypass Switch Module Assemblies, and they have a bunch of them. The
    one's I am looking at are AMP part # 501916-3, at a cost of $650 per
    unit, with quantity discounts available.

1706.3Support for OBR...ADOV01::MANUELOver the Horizon....Wed Jun 14 1995 10:126
    You need to ensure that the concentrators and the FDDI adapters you use
    have a connection to drive the OBR, most of our DAS adapters do have
    this connection and I think that the DECconcentrator 500 does also.

    Steve.
