1682.0. "FDDI - NETBEUI Problem !" by 49438::WALDHERR () Wed May 10 1995 13:29

Hi

I have a serious FDDI - Pathworks (NETBEUI) problem by my customer !

I post this entry in the FDDI and Pathworks_V5 conference.

Configuration:

	======== Ethernet ===========
	     |		    	 |
	     |		    	 |
	AXP3000-700         axp3000-700		FDDI-Sniffer
	     s                   s                    s
	     |		    	 |		      |
	     |		    	 |		      |
	      ---------------    |    ----------------

			      m   m   m SDDI (IBM type 1 Cable, TR)
			      |
			      |
			      s
			   WfW PC (with Schneider&Koch SDDI Card)

PC:	WfW V3.11 (NETBEUI)

AXP:	VMS V6.1 CLUSTER with shadowed SCSI disks
	OSI V6.1
	Pathworks V5.0B (with NETBEUI)

Symptom:

The PC and the AXP-Cluster is scessfully booted.
A copy (1.2 MB file) from an AXP to an PC takes 20 seconds.
If the customer starts an shadow copy on the AXP-Cluster the copy of the same
File takes only 1.2 seconds !! This condition is stable until the Synoptics
FDDI Concentrator is reseted.

Analysis:

fast copy condition:

	   --->
	PC	AXP SMB Command get disk attributes
	AXP	PC	SMB Response got disk attributes
	PC	AXP	SMB Command	Open File

	AXP	PC	NETBEUI send 1468 bytes data
	AXP	PC	NETBEUI send 1468 bytes data

	.
	AXP	PC	NETBEUI send 432 bytes data
	PC  	AXP	NETBEUI		Data Ack
	PC AXP SMB Command Read Block Raw 65024
        AXP PC NETBEUI send 1468 bytes data

slow copy condition:

           --->

        AXP PC LLC Supervisor frame, Receiver Ready
        AXP PC SMB Response got disk attributes
        PC AXP SMB Command Open File
        AXP PC LLC Supervisor frame, Receiver Ready
        AXP     PC      SMB Response    Opened
        PC AXP SMB Command Read Block Raw 65024
        AXP PC LLC Supervisor frame, Receiver Ready
        AXP PC NETBEUI send 1468 bytes data
        AXP PC NETBEUI send 1468 bytes data

        PC      AXP     NETBEUI         Data Ack
        AXP PC LLC Supervisor frame, Receiver Ready FINAL
        PC AXP SMB Command Read Block Raw 65024
        AXP PC LLC Supervisor frame, Receiver Ready
0.9xx seconds later
	AXP PC LLC Supervisor frame, Receiver Ready POLL
        PC AXP LLC Supervisor frame, Receiver Ready FINAL
        AXP PC NETBEUI send 1468 bytes data
        AXP PC NETBEUI send 1468 bytes data
        .
        .
        .

	On each subsequent DATA ACK and READ BLOCK RAW we lost again 0.9
	seconds !!

If my explanations are not detailed enough you can copy the Sniffer files from

VNABRW::ANDIST::DKB100:[WALDHERR.TEMP]

BADCOPY.FDC;1          2798  10-MAY-1995 18:00:59.00
GOODCOPY.FDC;1         2103  10-MAY-1995 17:59:01.00

What's going on here ??
Any help is welcome !

Thanks
Andreas

    Sorry

    > I post this entry in the FDDI and Pathworks_V5 conference.

    As I can see the Pathworks_V5 conference is write protected so I post
    it to the NOTED::PWDOSWINV5 conference !

    Andreas

Your delay is the Token-Ring...... Get rid of it and use 10baseX, or FDDI,
directly, you'll see a big improvement, as well as sustained ......
