1661.0. "FDDI ERRORS - RiNG INIT RECEIVED" by GIDDAY::STANISLAUS () Fri Apr 28 1995 02:25

A customer has a fairly simply FDDI network with two DC500 units
in a ring. So this is a very small ring with the two DC500 boxes sitting next to
each other.

To the above are 2 x SAS attached DEC7000 systems, dual home attached
2 x DECnis units and dual home attached 2 x DB620 units.

About 10 or 12 System Buffer Unavailable errors are logged on the
DC500 when he looks at the line counters using DECmcc. These errors occur
on both DC500 units.

Also about 4 or 5 RING INITS RECEIVED are seen on both DC500 units. This
count is exactly equal on both DC500 units.

Without a FDDI SNIFFER (hard question) what should I look at.

WHat does SYSTEM BUFFER UNAVAILABLE MEAN when DECmcc looks at the
DC500 line counters ?

There is no impact to the users although the customer is concerned with
the above errors - SYSTEM BUFFER UNAIVALBLE and RING INITS RECEIVED.

There is guarantee from the customer that the FDDI network is totally
an undisturbed network - meaning there is no one connecting or disconnecting
FDDI cables or turning OFF/ON anything attached to the FDDI network.

All FDDI cables are DEC's cables.

The DC500 units are running ver 3.4A Firmware and the DB600 units are
running 1.3G F/W.

The Rinhg inits received just mean that the ring went through a claim
process - its not serious unless its happenning at a high, and
unexplained rate. Someone pulling a connector in and out will cause
    this to toggle.

I don't remember what the other message means - maybe someone else can
    conmment.

No reply for long about "system Buffer Unavailable " on DC500.
Please what does this mean and does it indicate any potential problem ?
customer observes - this counter incrementing on daily basis.

    Thnaks for any feedback.

System buffers unavailable means that the DC500 didn't have
enough resources available to keep up with traffic destined
to it, directly addressed or broadcast, and dropped it. I don't
    believe it an issue.
